How a Mobile Programmer Uses FlexiHub to Program Vehicles Remotely

Driving from garage to garage eats up the day. Here's how one programmer is moving more of his work online. Mathieu came to us with his honest review, and we want to share it with you.

The Problem

Replacing a control module is rarely as simple as just swapping it out. The new unit must be programmed to work with the vehicle, which often requires a specialist with the appropriate software and interface.

For mobile programmers, this typically involves a lot of driving. They travel to the shop, plug in the equipment, perform the programming, pack up, and then head to the next location. While their expertise is the most valuable aspect of the service, the time spent on the road can take up a significant portion of their day.

Mathieu Vaugeois wanted to spend less of his time on the road.

Remote Vehicle Programming with FlexiHub

Mathieu is a mobile programmer who predominantly works with garages and body shops in his area. He travels from shop to shop to program replacement modules and assist in diagnosing vehicle problems. Over the past year, he has increasingly relied on FlexiHub as he encourages his customers to adopt remote programming.

The Setup

The workflow is straightforward. The customer connects their own J2534 Vehicle Communication Interface (VCI) to the vehicle and to a computer at the shop. FlexiHub then shares that USB device over the internet. On Mathieu's end, the VCI appears as if it were connected locally, allowing him to run his software and connect to the car using the customer's interface.

There is no need to build anything or ship hardware; the shop already has the VCI, and Mathieu already possesses the necessary software.

What It Unlocked

The primary benefit of this setup is that distance is no longer an issue. In Mathieu's words, it works every time "like I was there," regardless of whether the customer is 50 km or 3,000 km away.

Reliability is another crucial aspect he emphasizes. He finds the setup and interface easy to use and has not experienced any connection drops. Previously, Mathieu tried other tools but found them complicated and plagued by random connection issues.

He has reached out to FlexiHub support twice and reports that they were genuinely helpful both times, even when he faced challenges beyond his expertise. He concludes that FlexiHub is a "must-have for anyone who needs access to remote USB."

Where It Gets Complicated

Mathieu acknowledges that this isn't a perfect solution. Some jobs require more than just a J2534 interface. For instance, connecting to Mercedes vehicles necessitates its own specific VCI and software.

This limitation stems from the vehicle and the manufacturer's tools, not from the connection itself. While FlexiHub effectively relocates the interface you have to wherever you are, it cannot enhance the interface beyond its designed capabilities. Before taking on a remote job, it's essential to verify that the brand and procedure can be accomplished using J2534.

Despite these exceptions, Mathieu asserts that FlexiHub works very well for its intended purpose. Although he still travels to some jobs, he can now manage many others from his desk thanks to FlexiHub.
